Easyjet from Gatwick: Gate agent didn’t give my passport back

A Cautionary Tale: Don’t Forget Your Passport When Flying EasyJet from Gatwick

Traveling can be an exhilarating experience, but it can also lead to unexpected challenges, as I discovered on my recent journey with EasyJet from Gatwick Airport. This post serves as a crucial reminder for travelers about the importance of checking that you have your passport after passing through security.

On April 21st, I set off for Italy early in the morning, flying from Gatwick’s North terminal. After my boarding pass was scanned, the gate agent took a moment to examine my passport. Suddenly, his demeanor shifted; he became quite abrupt, insisting that I check the size of my backpack. Despite fitting the bag comfortably in the sizing cage, his confrontational behavior left me flustered—after all, it was still dark outside, and I hadn’t even had my coffee yet.

Once onboard and settling into my seat, I started to replay the morning’s events in my mind—and that’s when it struck me: I hadn’t been given my passport back. A quick check of my belongings confirmed my fears; the passport was missing.

Upon informing the cabin crew, they expressed their surprise, noting that gate agents typically conduct a final sweep for items left behind before the aircraft takes off. The crew quickly reached out to EasyJet’s London office for assistance. In the days that followed, I decided to file a report with Sussex Police, the authority responsible for Gatwick. Unfortunately, they concluded that no criminal activity had occurred and closed the case. I also tried reaching out to EasyJet directly. While they acknowledged my concern and expressed intent to resolve the matter, it seemed my emails were met with radio silence until I nudged them for updates.

Interestingly, I discovered that another traveler experienced a similar situation on a flight from Gatwick just a day prior. It appears that early morning flights may lead to distracted minds and careless oversights.

This experience has reinforced an important travel principle: always ensure you have your passport in hand after passing through security. If a gate agent neglects to return your documentation and
