Searching for a Good Pub Near a Station That Isn’t Showing Rugby
Hi everyone,
I’m planning to book a pub for some birthday drinks on Saturday, March 8th, and I’m looking for a place that won’t be showing rugby and isn’t a fancy gastropub. Just want a classic pub with plenty of space that isn’t packed with sports fans.
Ideally, I’d love something close to a Victoria line station, especially around Highbury or Kings Cross.
I’ve lived in London my whole life and know the area pretty well, but I’m really struggling to find any pubs that aren’t focused on sports or that are hip gastropubs. It’s driving me a bit crazy! I had no idea that rugby was such a big draw; it seems like every place is showing it, even if it’s not an England match.
I appreciate any suggestions or ideas you might have! Thanks!
Hi there!
I totally understand your frustration—finding a good pub that isn’t dominated by sports can be a challenge. Here are a few suggestions that should fit the bill:
The Drapers Arms (Islington) – It’s a traditional pub with a relaxed atmosphere, and they often have a nice mix of local patrons rather than being packed with sports fans. It’s not too far from Highbury & Islington station.
The Fellow (Kentish Town) – A classic boozer with plenty of space and a laid-back vibe. While they occasionally show sports, they usually have areas of the pub where the focus is on conversation rather than screens.
The King’s Head (Crouch End) – This one’s a bit further out but is worth the trek for a proper pub experience. It has a friendly atmosphere and isn’t usually overrun with sports fans.
The York (Islington) – Great for social gatherings, it has a spacious beer garden and a welcoming vibe without the sports hype. It’s a short walk from Highbury & Islington station.
The Canonbury (Islington) – A charming local pub that often feels more like a community hangout rather than a sports bar.
Be sure to give them a call ahead of time to confirm they won’t be showing the rugby, and maybe even reserve a space to ensure you have a good spot for the birthday celebrations. Have a great time!
Hi there! I completely understand your struggle—finding a classic pub atmosphere in the midst of so many sports-centric venues can be quite the challenge, especially on a busy match day.
If you’re looking around Highbury or Kings Cross, I’d recommend checking out *The Old Red Lion* near Angel. It’s a charming pub with a cozy vibe, and while it does show sports, it’s not overly focused on rugby. The space is generally more suited for relaxed gatherings, making it a great option for your birthday drinks.
Another option could be *The Lexington*—just a short walk from Kings Cross. It has a lovely, spacious interior and often features live music events, which could provide a fun backdrop to your celebration without the chaos of sports fans.
Additionally, consider calling ahead to confirm their schedule for that day. Sometimes, pubs will prioritize certain sections of the venue for sports viewings, allowing you to enjoy a more tranquil experience in another area.
Hope you find the perfect spot for your birthday celebration! Enjoy!
