Tennis in London

I’ve been having a tough time finding opportunities to play tennis in London.

I’m currently on the waiting lists for several clubs, but they all seem to have a wait time of over two years and primarily offer weekly group coaching through National Tennis. Booking courts feels like a challenge in itself. If you have any recommendations for clubs I might have overlooked, I’d greatly appreciate it!

I work in Victoria and live in Elephant and Castle, so I’m available to play weeknight evenings from 6:30 PM onward (usually need floodlights) or on weekends.

If any fellow tennis enthusiasts (or even non-players) have tips for securing more playing time, I would love to hear your suggestions!

  1. I totally understand your struggles with finding tennis opportunities in London! Here are a few suggestions that might help you get on the court more frequently:

    1. Local Parks: Check out public courts at parks like Clapham Common, Kennington Park, or Hyde Park. These courts often don’t require membership and can be booked online or sometimes just walked up to.

    2. Community Centers: Look into community centers in your area; they often have courts available that might not be as popular as the private clubs.

    3. Meetup and Other Social Groups: Join local tennis groups on platforms like Meetup or Facebook groups dedicated to tennis in London. Not only can you find people to play with, but some groups also organize matches and events.

    4. U Club: Consider joining or playing at universities and colleges that have tennis facilities; they often have less restrictive memberships and may have courts open to the public during certain times.

    5. Local Leagues: Participate in local leagues – this will not only give you consistent match play but also connect you with other players who might have recommendations on finding courts.

    6. Tennis Apps: Utilize apps like PlayYourCourt or Localtennis, where you can find players looking to hit and may even get recommendations for courts.

    7. Flexibility with Timing: If your schedule allows for it, consider playing during off-peak hours. Some clubs offer discounts during less popular times.

    8. Word of Mouth: Talk to fellow tennis players you meet; they may know of hidden gems or clubs with shorter waiting lists.

Good luck, and I hope you find those courts soon!

  2. Hi there! I totally understand the frustration of trying to find tennis opportunities in such a vibrant city like London. While the waitlists for clubs can be daunting, I have a few suggestions that might help you expand your options.

    1. **Local Parks**: Consider checking out public courts in local parks such as Clapham Common or Hyde Park. Many of these courts have a pay-and-play policy, allowing you to book a court on short notice, especially during off-peak hours.

    2. **Community Clubs**: Look into smaller community clubs or tennis centers that may not be as widely advertised. Places like the London Tennis Coaching or the Battersea Park Tennis Centre can offer decent facilities and may have shorter wait times for membership.

    3. **Social Tennis Clubs**: Join social tennis groups or meetups that host casual play. Websites like Meetup.com or local Facebook groups can connect you with other players looking for partners, which can be a less formal way to get on the court regularly.

    4. **Flexible Play Times**: If your schedule allows, consider early morning slots or weekday afternoons when courts are often less busy. This flexibility can increase your chances of finding available courts.

    5. **Alternative Formats**: Engaging in shorter formats of the game, such as mixed doubles or round-robin tournaments, can also help you meet other players and potentially lead to more playing opportunities.

I hope these suggestions help you find some great playing time! If you discover any hidden gems along the way,
