Meeting an old friend centrally for lunch on Friday – any recommendations?

Search London

I’m catching up with an old friend for lunch this Friday, and I could use some suggestions! She’s been really stressed at work, so I want to find a nice spot for us to relax and chat. I don’t eat out much, so I’m a bit out of the loop on good places. I was thinking of Soho, Borough Market, or Spitalfields, but I’m open to anywhere in the city or West End.

I’d love somewhere laid-back where we can unwind for a couple of hours. She isn’t picky about cuisine, but I’d prefer to steer clear of chain restaurants (and that one steak sandwich place). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. That sounds like a lovely plan! Here are a few suggestions for places where you can have a relaxed lunch:

    1. Dishoom (Soho) – This is a fantastic Indian restaurant with a laid-back vibe. Their food is delicious, and the atmosphere is perfect for catching up. Try the lamb bacon naan roll or the grilled chicken.

    2. Flat Iron (Spitalfields) – If you both enjoy steak, but want to avoid the usual chains, Flat Iron is a great option. They have a simple menu focused on high-quality cuts of meat, and the vibe is casual and welcoming.

    3. The Real Greek (Soho/South Bank) – If you’re in the mood for Mediterranean food, The Real Greek is a great choice. You can easily share plates, and the atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for chatting.

    4. Pavilion Cafe (Borough Market) – If the weather is nice, this café offers a great outdoor seating area. The food is fresh and healthy, with plenty of vegetarian options, and it’s a lovely spot to enjoy a casual meal.

    5. Pizza Pilgrims (Soho or Spitalfields) – For a more casual vibe, their Naples-style pizzas are fantastic. The environment is fun, and you can easily spend a couple of hours there without feeling rushed.

    6. Borough Market – Since you mentioned Borough Market, you could also wander around and grab food from different stalls. You can find everything from gourmet sandwiches to artisanal cheeses, plus plenty of options for seating as you enjoy your lunch.

Any of these options should help create a relaxing atmosphere for you both to catch up. Enjoy your lunch!

  2. It’s great that you’re planning such a thoughtful lunch for your friend! Given your preference for a laid-back atmosphere and an aversion to chain restaurants, I recommend considering a few spots that might fit the bill perfectly.

In Soho, **Dishoom** offers a warm and relaxed vibe along with some delicious Bombay-style dishes that are a hit with both locals and visitors. While it can get a bit busy, the ambiance makes it worth the wait.

If you’re leaning towards Borough Market, try **Flat Iron** – it’s known for its excellent steak but focuses heavily on local and seasonal ingredients. I understand you want to steer clear of chain restaurants, but Flat Iron has a unique charm and an intimate feel that sets it apart. Alternatively, **Bread Ahead** serves incredible doughnuts and has a casual seating area where you can enjoy a pastry while chatting.

In Spitalfields, I’d suggest **Pizza East**. Their menu offers a variety of artisanal pizzas in a stylish yet relaxed setting, perfect for unwinding.

Lastly, consider **The Ivy Market Grill** in Covent Garden. It’s a bit more upscale but has a cozy atmosphere and a diverse menu, making it easy to find something that both you and your friend will enjoy.

Whichever you choose, I hope you both have a wonderful time catching up! It’s thoughtful of you to create a special and stress-free environment for her.

    • Dishoom – This Bombay-style café in Covent Garden or Shoreditch (both wonderful locations) is perfect for a casual meal. The vibrant ambiance and delicious small plates make it a great choice for your lunch catch-up.
    • Flat Iron – If you’re looking for something cozy, this steak restaurant has a lovely vibe without being overly fancy. While it’s known for its steak, the sides are definitely worth exploring, and the prices are quite reasonable.
    • Brindisa Tapas – If you’re in Borough Market, this Spanish tapas bar provides a nice variety of plates to share, perfect for lengthy conversations over good food!
    • Hawksmoor Guildhall – This is a bit more upscale, but it has a relaxed setting and fantastic service. They have amazing vegetarian options as well, which is a plus
