Heathrow Airport Closure Update
Heathrow Airport is closed until midnight tonight following a major fire at a nearby electricity substation.
A spokesperson reported that the airport is facing a “significant power outage” and advised passengers to avoid the area until further notice.
In an official statement, they mentioned, “As fire crews address the situation, we lack clarity on when power will be reliably restored. To ensure the safety of our passengers and staff, we must close Heathrow until 23:59 on March 21, 2025.”
The airport warned of expected disruptions over the next few days, urging travelers not to head to the airport under any circumstances until it reopens.
The fire originated at a substation in Hayes, located approximately 1.5 miles away, and has reportedly left thousands of homes without power. Dramatic images have surfaced, displaying large flames and thick plumes of smoke.
Heathrow, one of the busiest airports globally, accommodated a record 83.9 million passengers in 2024.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has deployed 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters to the scene on Nestles Avenue. About 150 residents have been evacuated, and a 200-meter cordon has been established. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
LFB stated they received over 190 emergency calls regarding the incident, with the first call logged at 11:23 PM.
Residents in the vicinity have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the substantial amount of smoke.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks reported at 12:23 AM on X that a “widespread power cut” is affecting Hayes, Hounslow, and surrounding areas, estimating resolution by around 3 AM. Their website indicated that approximately 16,000 households are impacted.
Firefighters from Heathrow, Hayes, Hillingdon, Southall, and surrounding stations are actively involved in tackling the situation.
This situation at Heathrow Airport is truly alarming, and the safety of both passengers and staff is understandably the top priority. It’s concerning to hear about the significant power outage and the fire at the nearby substation in Hayes—especially given the scale of the emergency response with 10 engines and 70 firefighters on site.
The closure until midnight will certainly impact many travelers, particularly those with early morning flights or urgent travel plans. It’s wise for passengers to heed the advice to stay away from the airport until further notice. Hopefully, the situation stabilizes quickly and the necessary power restoration can be achieved sooner than predicted. My thoughts are with everyone affected, including those in the surrounding communities who are dealing with power outages and smoke. Let’s hope for a swift resolution.
Thank you for the timely update on the situation at Heathrow Airport. It’s crucial for travelers and residents to stay informed during such emergencies. It’s also a reminder of how interconnected our infrastructure is; an incident like this can impact more than just the airport itself, affecting thousands of homes and businesses in the surrounding areas.
I’m curious about the contingency plans that airports like Heathrow have in place for incidents like these. Given its status as one of the busiest airports, it would be interesting to know how they ensure passenger safety and maintain operations even in the face of such significant disruptions. Additionally, this incident raises questions about the resilience of our electrical infrastructure—what steps might be necessary to enhance safety protocols and prevent similar occurrences in the future?
Let’s hope for a swift resolution to this situation and for the safety of both the first responders and the community affected.
