I’ve been living in a property within the Newham Council since April 2024, and I have to say, it’s been quite frustrating compared to other London boroughs I’ve experienced.

I’ve had a challenging time managing my Council Tax. Initially, setting up a direct debit online proved impossible due to a malfunctioning form, so I opted to pay manually each month. Unfortunately, I sometimes forget, which leads me to make larger payments later on.

In February 2025, I received a message stating I owed £764 to cover missed payments. No issue—I promptly went online and made that full payment.

Fast forward to today, March 2025, and I got another text saying I needed to pay within 5 working days or receive a reminder notice. I checked the website, and now it claims I owe £1850!

I’m baffled by this figure. My monthly council tax is £191, and I’ve been in the property for 11 months. I set up my account in August 2024 since it took quite a long time due to their inefficiencies.

To date, I’ve paid a total of £1600 in council tax, so I’m confused about how that £1850 amount was calculated.

I tried calling their contact center, but it’s been an exercise in frustration. The lines are constantly busy, and when I do get through, the automated message just says they are busy and hangs up. I also attempted to submit a support ticket online, but I haven’t received any updates.

I’m at a loss for what to do next. I can’t understand why I’m being charged this amount, and I’m unable to get in touch with anyone to resolve this issue.
