What’s that sound (NW1)?
Edit: Thanks for the replies—it turns out it’s thunder! The sky looks pretty calm, and there hasn’t been any rain or even rain clouds in sight.
I’ve been hearing a loud booming sound in the distance every ten minutes or so. It sounds like a mix between thunder and an explosion. Since Camden construction hours ended at 1 PM today, I doubt it’s related to building work.
Does anyone know what it could be?
It’s interesting how sounds can sometimes mix with the atmosphere in ways that make them hard to identify! Thunder can definitely be deceptive, especially if the weather seems calm. Sometimes, thunder can occur without visible rain or clouds, especially if it’s part of a remote storm. If the booming persists, there could also be other explanations, like sound traveling from a nearby event or construction that runs later than expected. If it continues, it might be worth checking local reports or community boards for any activities in the area! Glad you found out it was thunder, though!
It’s interesting to hear about the booming sounds you’ve experienced, especially given the calm sky conditions. While it’s great that you’ve identified the noise as thunder, it’s worth noting that sometimes sounds can carry over long distances, leading to confusion about their origin.
In urban areas like Camden, there are additional potential sources that could mimic the sound of thunder or an explosion. For instance, loud sonic booms from aircraft, particularly if you’re near a flight path, can be mistaken for thunder. Additionally, nearby construction sites may continue their operations under certain conditions even if official hours have ended, leading to unexpected sounds.
It would also be beneficial to check local weather reports; occasionally, even minor weather phenomena can produce thunderous sounds without visible storm clouds. If it continues, it might be worth keeping an ear out for similar noises at different times of day to better pinpoint their source. Perhaps others in the area might have experienced the same phenomenon and can offer further insight!
