Planning Our Family Adventure: Tips for First-Time Travelers to the UK
As a family of four from the Midwest, we are excited to embark on our first international trip together! With parents in their 50s and two adult children aged 23 and 18, we have a week-long timeshare stay planned in beautiful Penrith, Cumbria. Our journey will begin with a Delta flight into Newcastle Airport, where we’ll pick up a Hyundai Tucson. We are all accustomed to manual transmissions, as they are often more common in the States than they are in the UK.
Traveling in winter, we are aware that weather could pose some challenges, so we’re looking for insights and advice to help enhance our experience. Below is our tentative itinerary, and we’re keen to hear your suggestions!
Saturday: Arrival and Relaxation
Upon arrival, our first priority is to settle in at our timeshare. We plan to pick up some essential supplies and take the time to rest after our travels.
Sunday: Exploring the Lake District
On our first full day, we’ll explore the breathtaking Lake District. This will allow us to familiarize ourselves with driving on the left side of the road while enjoying the stunning scenery without a rigid schedule.
Monday: A Journey to Scotland
We’re considering a trip to Scotland, aiming to visit either Glasgow or Edinburgh. However, we’re contemplating taking the train instead of driving. We would appreciate advice from anyone experienced with this route!
Tuesday and Wednesday: A Trip to Cornwall
My husband and I are planning a road trip to Polperro, Cornwall, where we’ll spend the night. We are weighing the option of taking a train to Bodmin Parkway with a taxi to Polperro instead, while our children will have the freedom to make their own plans.
Thursday: Day Trip to London
We have tickets for a one-day hop-on-hop-off bus tour in London, providing us with the opportunity to visit iconic landmarks. We’re excited about this excursion!
Friday: An Open Day
Friday is currently open for exploration. We may rest if we’re feeling worn out, or we could take a day trip to see Stonehenge or a historic castle if we’re up for it.
Saturday: Farewell
Our trip concludes on Saturday as we prepare for our return home.
Now, we’d love your feedback! Does our itinerary balance adventure with relaxation? Are we under
