A Comprehensive Guide to Bringing Your Pet from the USA to the UK via France
Bringing a beloved pet into the UK can seem like a daunting task, especially when traveling from the USA. After successfully navigating the process twice in the fall of 2023 and again in 2024, I felt compelled to share my insights. If you’re planning to bring your furry friend along for a long visit or a permanent move, hopefully, these tips will make your journey smoother than mine was two years ago.
Understanding International Travel Regulations
If your pet is small enough for in-cabin travel, you might initially be tempted to take a direct flight. However, due to stringent UK regulations, this is not permitted. Thankfully, there’s a workaround: fly into an EU country that allows in-cabin pet travel, and then make your way to the UK from there. France is a convenient option that is often overlooked, making it a popular choice for many pet owners.
I personally flew with both French Bee in 2023 and United Airlines in 2024, and both airline experiences were satisfactory.
Choosing Your Mode of Transportation
When considering your journey from France to the UK, keep in mind that the Eurostar train does not permit pets on the Paris to London route. This narrows your options down to taking a ferry — either a boat ferry or one that accommodates vehicles. Most ferries require passengers with pets to travel by car, which can only access pet-friendly facilities. While you can rent a car, this might not come cheap.
Alternatively, if you prefer not to drive, consider enlisting someone to help you navigate your pet transportation. I opted for Le Shuttle, which is an underground train service that runs from Calais, France, to Folkestone, UK. This method is typically quicker than a traditional boat ferry. For added peace of mind, I arranged for taxi services in Folkestone, should any last-minute changes occur.
For travelers from Paris to Calais, there are numerous options for getting to Calais, including rental car services and local trains that welcome pets.
Managing the Necessary Paperwork
The most crucial aspect of your journey involves ensuring you have the correct health certificates for both France and the UK, as their requirements differ significantly. Your pet will need to enter the UK within five days of the health certificate being issued, so timing is key.
