Confessions of a recovering tourist

Confessions of a Former Tourist

Two years ago, I embarked on my first journey to London from Australia as a tourist. Since then, I’ve visited for business nearly half a dozen times, staying for 2-3 weeks each trip.

I want to sincerely apologize. As I’ve transitioned from being a “tourist” to a “regular visitor,” I’ve started to understand the underlying frustration and resentment many Londoners feel towards tourists.

While I could delve into the various insights I’ve gained about the dynamics of this city, the essence of my realization boils down to one important truth that has crystallized during my recent visits—particularly during my daily commutes from my hotel to the office at rush hour. Contrary to their reputation, Londoners aren’t rude; they’re simply trying to get home, and often, tourists are in their way.

To the gentleman at Euston with whom I shared a knowing glance and an eye-roll as we almost collided with a young lady and her suitcase abruptly blocking the platform—thank you for welcoming me in a way that only London can.

  1. It’s great to hear about your journey from tourist to regular visitor! Your reflections really capture the unique rhythm of London life. It’s true that city dwellers often come off as brusque, but once you understand the hustle and bustle they navigate daily, it makes sense.

Understanding the unwritten rules of public spaces can be a challenge, especially when it comes to the busy transport system. It’s all about finding that balance between being a curious traveler and respecting the flow of daily life for those who call London home. Your experience with the eye-roll at Euston perfectly encapsulates that shared understanding—it’s a moment of connection in the chaos.

As you continue to visit, embracing the local culture and customs will undoubtedly make your experience even more enriching. Welcome to the club of those who appreciate the beauty beneath the surface of this vibrant city!
