Exploring the English Countryside: Seeking Advice for Our Upcoming Trip
Hello Readers,
As I delve into the enchanting charm of the English countryside for our upcoming travel plans, I find myself seeking a bit of guidance and insight from fellow travelers and locals alike. We’ve been fortunate enough to explore London, Scotland, and Ireland in the past, and I’m eager to unearth more of England’s hidden treasures.
A Bit About Us
We’re a middle-aged couple who deeply enjoy immersing ourselves in the cultures of the places we visit. Walking is a passion of ours—we once covered 50 miles in a week across the beautiful landscapes of Scotland! Our interests lean heavily towards art, architecture, museums, antiquing, and all things historical. In essence, a destination that some might deem “quaint” or “too quiet” can often delight our senses.
Our Preliminary Itinerary
We are planning a trip lasting 10 to 12 days, excluding our international travel days. Our journey will begin with a day or two in London before we venture into the picturesque English countryside to embrace that quintessential “small town” experience. We’re envisioning leisurely walks through stunning scenery, admiring beautiful old homes and churches, browsing quaint shops, and relaxing in local pubs.
Additionally, we hope to squeeze in a brief trip via the Chunnel to Paris, as my wife missed out on visiting the Louvre during her last visit there.
Proposed Route:
We’re contemplating a route through the enchanting Cotswolds, inspired by a variety of travel videos and some research. Our rough itinerary includes navigating through towns like:
London > Oxford > Stow-on-the-Wold > Lower Slaughter > Bourton-on-the-Water > Bath > London > Paris?
Seeking Your Expertise
As I sift through various discussions, I’ve come across some mixed reviews about visiting the Cotswolds. Many locals express a lack of enthusiasm for the area, but I find myself yearning for local insights on alternative suggestions. Here are a few questions I have:
-
Alternative Locations: Given the mixed responses about the Cotswolds, are there other areas in England you would recommend for a tranquil countryside experience?
-
Travel Logistics: We initially thought about moving from one town to another by train, enjoying the freedom to hop on and off as desired, typically staying for one or two nights. Would you recommend this approach, or should we consider selecting a couple of hubs to use as home bases
