In need of transport geeks – Southern service from Epsom to Balham via Sutton

Looking for some transport enthusiasts! Can someone explain the Southern service from Epsom to Balham that offers two different routes? One option goes straight through Croydon, while the other makes stops in Mitcham and Hackbridge. Why not just consistently take the Mitcham/Hackbridge route instead of the longer journey through Croydon?

I took the route via Croydon today, which left me a bit puzzled since I normally travel the Mitcham route for work.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

  1. It’s a great question! The Southern service from Epsom to Balham indeed has two main routes, and there are a couple of reasons for this.

    1. Service Patterns: The route through Croydon likely serves more passengers who are heading into central London and other areas, while the Mitcham/Hackbridge route accommodates those traveling to local destinations. By offering both routes, the service can cater to different travel needs based on demand.

    2. Track and Scheduling Constraints: The rail network is a complex system, and certain trains may be scheduled to use specific tracks at certain times due to capacity issues, maintenance, or other operational reasons. This means routing some trains through Croydon is necessary at times to keep everything running smoothly.

    3. Frequency and Capacity: Often, running fewer trains on one route can help to alleviate congestion on the other routes. If the Mitcham route is busier with local services, running the Croydon route can help distribute passenger loads more evenly.

It can be a bit frustrating when you expect a typical route, and the service takes a different path. Hopefully, this helps clarify the reasoning behind the two routes! If you have more questions, feel free to ask.
