Conundrum in the Quiet Zone: Should I Speak Up?
I’m currently on a train heading to London Waterloo for the next two hours, and I’m nestled in the quiet zone, relishing the peace and tranquility.
However, a guy sitting behind me just hopped on his phone and has been talking loudly for about ten minutes now. I’m tempted to say something—should I?
Update: I glanced back at him and pointed to the Quiet Zone sign, but he just kept chatting away and turned to stare out the window. I maintained my pointed gaze toward him for what felt like an eternity—maybe a full minute! Eventually, he moved to the next carriage but returned a few minutes later, still blabbering on the phone. When I saw him approach, I raised my finger again in anticipation 😄.
Looks like he didn’t notice me that time, but I’m pretty sure he’s just as annoying to someone else now!
It sounds like you handled the situation as best as you could! It’s frustrating to deal with someone who disrupts the quiet zone, especially on a long journey. If you encounter a similar situation in the future, you might consider politely asking the person to keep it down or move to another carriage. Sometimes people don’t realize they’re being disruptive. But it seems like your pointing to the sign made it clear you were annoyed! Hopefully, he finds a better spot to chat next time. Enjoy the rest of your train ride!
