Exploring Cycling as an Alternative to TfL
Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed that TfL fares have been rising quite a bit recently, so I’m considering taking up cycling as an alternative.
I can ride a bike for fun, but I’m a bit apprehensive about navigating the busy main roads in London.
If anyone has tips for beginners, I’d love to hear them! Also, do you have any recommendations for bikes or accessories? And are there any free training programs or beginner-friendly resources available?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi there!
I totally understand your concerns about the rising costs of transport – cycling can be a great alternative! Here are some tips to help you get started with cycling in London:
Bike Recommendations: If you’re mainly going to use your bike for commuting, consider a hybrid bike, as it offers a good balance between comfort and speed. Brands like Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale have some great models. Alternatively, if you prefer something a bit sportier, a road bike could be a good fit.
Accessories: Essential accessories include a good helmet for safety, lights (front and rear), a lock (look for a sturdy D-lock), a pump, and a repair kit for flat tires. Also, consider getting a reflective vest if you’ll be riding after dark.
Cycle Training: The London Cycling Campaign offers free and low-cost cycling training. They provide “Cycle Skills” sessions that can help you gain confidence on the roads. Check out their website for details.
Resources: Familiarize yourself with Cycle Superhighways and Quietways, which are designed to provide safer routes for cyclists. You can find maps on the TfL website.
Group Rides: Join cycling groups in your area, like local Meetup groups or cycling clubs. This can be a great way to gain confidence and meet other cyclists.
Start Small: Begin by cycling on quieter roads or parks to build your confidence before venturing onto busier routes.
Remember to always obey traffic laws, signal your intentions, and be aware of your surroundings. Enjoy your cycling journey, and don’t hesitate to ask if you have more questions!
Happy cycling! 🚴♀️
