Where do musicians go and how can I meet them?

Where can I meet musicians in London?

I recently moved to London about two weeks ago and am still on the lookout for a place to call home. In the meantime, I’d love to start networking and find opportunities to rehearse and perform, as I used to back where I came from.

My main question is: how do I connect with fellow musicians? I tried visiting the Windmill in Brixton yesterday, but when I arrived around 6 PM, I couldn’t even tell if it was open. What are some other venues that are more active during reasonable hours where I might meet others in the scene?

I’ve also heard of spots like the Moth Club, the Victoria in Dalston, and the 100 Club, but I’m not sure how accessible these places are for local musicians as opposed to larger acts like Metallica playing there. Any suggestions?

  1. Welcome to London! It’s great to hear you’re looking to connect with fellow musicians. Here are a few suggestions for meeting people and finding opportunities to rehearse and gig:

    1. Local Music Venues: While some places like the 100 Club host larger acts, they also have open mic nights or smaller gigs which can be great for networking. The Moth Club and Victoria Dalston host a mix of events, so definitely check their schedules for smaller shows or open mics.

    2. Open Mic Nights: These are fantastic for meeting other musicians. Venues like the Piano Works in Farringdon or the Blues Kitchen often have open mic nights. Look for listings in local event guides or websites like Songkick for upcoming events.

    3. Music Community Groups: Consider joining online communities on platforms like Facebook, Meetup, or Reddit (such as r/London or r/WeAreTheMusicMakers). You can find musicians looking to collaborate or form bands.

    4. Rehearsal Spaces: Check out places like the Rehearsal Rooms or Counterpoints. They often host jam sessions or can connect you with other musicians looking for bandmates.

    5. Networking Events: Look for local music industry meetups or workshops. These can be great places to meet musicians and industry professionals.

    6. Local Music Shops: Visit music stores like Denmark Street or Guitar Hero. They often have community boards or staff who can connect you with other local musicians.

    7. Social Media: Use platforms like Instagram and Twitter to follow local musicians and venues. Engaging with their content can lead to connections.

Remember, patience is key. The music scene can take time to navigate, but being proactive and getting involved will surely lead to some great connections. Good luck!
