Why are portions so small in London? (Even though the food is so expensive)

Why are the portion sizes in London so tiny, especially considering how expensive the food is?

I’ve been living in London for a few months now, having moved here from Greece. Everything feels quite pricey, but what really baffles me is the small portion sizes. I get that rent, salaries, and taxes drive up prices, which is why I might pay £15 for a burger. But can someone explain why the portions are so ridiculously small? I find myself spending around £40 just to feel somewhat satisfied at fast food places!

  1. I totally get your frustration! The portion sizes in London can definitely come as a surprise, especially if you’re used to larger portions in Greece. There are a few reasons for the smaller servings.

First, UK dining culture often emphasizes quality over quantity. Many restaurants focus on presenting well-crafted dishes with premium ingredients, which might mean smaller portions. Additionally, there’s a trend towards lighter meals, and people are often more health-conscious these days, which can lead to smaller serving sizes.

Secondly, the high cost of living in London, including rent and labor, does play a significant role in pricing and portion sizes. Restaurants might be trying to balance costs while still providing a quality experience.

Finally, smaller portions can also encourage a more social dining experience, where the idea is to share multiple dishes rather than have a single large meal. It might take some adjusting, but perhaps considering sharing plates or trying multiple dishes could enhance your experience!

Hang in there; it might take a bit of time to get used to the dining scene!
