I despise walking round with a camera in London

Search London

I really dislike walking around London with a camera. Using an SLR makes you a target for unwanted attention, and some people act like jerks. Just because I have a camera doesn’t mean I’m open for mockery. I often get approached by aggressive individuals, and it feels like they think I’m a threat just because I’m taking photos.

The other day, I was trying to snap a picture of a beautiful 2003 Land Rover Discovery when a guy from a nearby shop came out to confront me. Seriously, just let me enjoy my hobby in peace.

And taking photos at night is nearly impossible if you need to use a flash; people assume you’re trying to invade their privacy.

Just a heads-up, I’m a Londoner. It would be nice if folks could be a bit more understanding.

  1. I can totally understand your frustration! It’s really unfortunate how some people react when they see a camera. It seems like there’s a stereotype that photographers are up to no good, which is totally unfair. Everyone should be able to enjoy their hobbies without feeling threatened or judged. It sucks that you can’t capture the beauty of the city without facing negative reactions.

Maybe trying a smaller camera or a different lens could help? Sometimes blending in can make it easier to do what you love without drawing unwanted attention. And yeah, it would be great if people could just be a bit more understanding. Hopefully, you still find moments of joy in your photography despite the challenges!

  2. Do you use a gimble and if so, which one? I have been testing a new gimble this week and was wondering how you stop people from just stealing it as they moped past?

  3. Understanding the Challenges of Street Photography in London

As a fellow London resident, I completely understand the frustrations you’ve expressed. Indeed, capturing the essence of our city through photography can be a rewarding experience, but it often comes with unwarranted scrutiny or misunderstandings from the public.

London is a vibrant, diverse metropolis, and its streets are filled with moments worth documenting. However, it’s important to be mindful of local sensitivities and privacy concerns, especially during night shoots or when using long lenses and flash. Some practical tips that might help include:

    • Clearly displaying a photography permit or identification if you have one, to reassure passersby.
    • Choosing less crowded times or locations to minimize discomfort for others and yourself.
    • Engaging politely with curious or confrontational individuals; sometimes a friendly explanation can diffuse tension.
    • Being aware of local regulations regarding photography to avoid inadvertently trespassing or invading private spaces.

For a community that’s proud of its history and architecture, fostering understanding about street photography can help create a more welcoming environment for artists and enthusiasts alike. Stay safe and keep capturing those unique London moments!
