A Heartfelt Thank You to London: A Journey of Joy and Acceptance
Traveling to a new city can be both exciting and daunting, especially when planning a trip to accommodate an autistic child’s unique interests. My son has long been fascinated by London’s iconic landmarks, particularly the fascinating London Underground and the majestic Elizabeth Tower. These interests have shaped his world in significant ways: our home resonates with the familiar chimes of Big Ben from BBC radio broadcasts, a large England flag adorns his bedroom wall, and his shelves display meticulously built tower models. Not to mention, he regularly insists on Walker’s crisps from our local British imports store (always crisps, never chips in his book!).
This year, I wanted to make his dream of experiencing London up close a reality for his birthday. Although this was our first international trip, which naturally brought some anxiety about managing his needs amidst the hustle and bustle of a foreign city, the invaluable advice I received from the online community eased my planning woes.
Upon arrival, we ensured my son wore his sunflower lanyard and badge to signify his invisible disability, an empowering choice he made himself as part of his self-advocacy journey. From our very first steps at customs, London’s warmth embraced us. Whether navigating through the bustling terminals, historical attractions, or beloved cafes, we were consistently met with patience and understanding. Remarkably, London’s locals and staff were considerate, offering assistance when needed and respecting my son’s sensory preferences without any judgment or unwelcome attention.
I cannot express how heartwarming it was to witness my son’s joy as he experienced his London dreams. Sitting together on the grass, he delighted in the live chimes of Big Ben. His face lit up with excitement boarding the Elizabeth Line, and he thrilled at the chance to run the London Underground simulator at the Transport Museum. Despite the challenge stairs represent for us both, he triumphed in climbing to the top of St. Paul’s Cathedral, a testament to his resilience and determination. After enduring a tough school year marred by bullying, these moments of joy and acceptance were a balm for his spirits.
To London, I extend a giant thank you. Your kindness, inclusivity, and exceptional hospitality have crafted memories of an extraordinary and affirming journey that neither my son nor I will ever forget.
