Trying to fit London, York, a narrowboat trip, and a seaside break into 12 days–help!

Planning an Exciting UK Adventure: A Family Trip to London, York, and Beyond

Embarking on a family vacation is always an exciting endeavor, and when it comes to planning a UK trip with kids aged 7 and 11, the possibilities are endless! As parents who have previously explored the breathtaking scenery of the Isle of Skye, we are eager to introduce our children to the wonders of the UK. Our itinerary includes iconic landmarks, tranquil narrowboat journeys, and perhaps a seaside escape, all within a 12-day timeframe in June 2026.

The Inspiration Behind Our Journey

My longstanding desire to experience life on a narrowboat originated from reading Jerome K. Jerome’s “Three Men in a Boat.” Now, my family is on board for this unique adventure. However, with so many thrilling options and experiences at our fingertips, it’s essential to create a balanced itinerary that allows us to savor each moment without feeling rushed.

Our Travel Interests

As we craft our travel plans, we are particularly drawn to the following activities:
– Immersing ourselves in stunning natural landscapes
– Relaxing and picnicking in vibrant city parks
– Sampling local cuisine
– Exploring historic ruins, especially those from the Roman era
– Enjoying beach outings, even if they are cold and rocky
– Engaging in kayaking and hiking adventures

To ensure a meaningful experience, we prefer a pace that allows for daily exploration while also designating one significant highlight each day. Utilizing public transit is our goal, especially considering our children’s preference for limiting travel time.

  • Thursday: Travel to York via train.
  • Thursday to Monday: We’ll settle in York, possibly indulging in day trips, with potential overnight excursions to the picturesque towns of Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay.
  • Monday to Thursday: A charming narrowboat rental experience awaits! We are contemplating three routes: 1) The Grand Union Canal near Warwick, 2) Bradford-on-Avon to Bath, or 3) Skipton.
