My Travel Experience: Journey from Germany to the UK as an EU Vaccinated Traveler
This week, I completed a highly anticipated trip from Germany to the UK, and I wanted to share my experience for anyone else planning a similar journey. Like many, I relied heavily on forums and communities for insights and reassurance as I navigated through the various travel restrictions. Here’s how my trip unfolded.
Pre-Trip Preparations
Initially, I planned my travel before the rules for EU and US vaccinated travelers were updated, so I was preparing for a mandatory quarantine on arrival. Fortunately, about a week before my departure, the UK government announced changes that ultimately eased those concerns. I made a quick adjustment to my travel plans, switching from an amber list arrival package—typically requiring Day 2 and Day 8 tests plus quarantine—to just a Day 2 test, which also allowed for a refund on the unnecessary tests.
Testing and Arrival at the Airport
Around 72 hours prior to my flight, I underwent a pre-departure test with Centogene at Frankfurt Airport. In hindsight, I might have opted for a free lateral flow test, but at the time, I wasn’t sure of their acceptance. Thankfully, my PCR test result arrived promptly within four hours.
This trip marked my first time flying since the onset of the pandemic, and much of the airport experience felt familiar. The more significant change was a designated line for boarding where passengers were required to present their passport, Passenger Locator Form (PLF), and negative test result. This process felt somewhat chaotic; maintaining social distancing was challenging, and the staff performed only a brief check of the initial pages of my documents.
Navigating Arrivals at Heathrow
Upon landing at London Heathrow (Terminal 2), I anticipated another round of document checks including my EU vaccination certificate. I kept the relevant app open on my phone for easy access, but to my surprise, I was never asked to show it. The staff reviewed my PLF again—confirming my vaccinated/exempt status—and waved me through to the e-gates. Scanning my passport was quick and easy, and within approximately 30 minutes, I was through customs and headed to the car park. This was a relief, as I expected a more extensive verification process.
Day 2 Testing Experience
The next morning, I took my Day 2 test at a GPDQ testing center. I was informed that I would receive my results the following day, but
