Celebrating 80 Years of VE Day: HMS Belfast Commemorates with Gun Salute
On the momentous occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), I had the privilege to capture a remarkable celebration aboard HMS Belfast. As a dedicated volunteer on this historic Royal Navy ship, I was granted special permission to document the powerful exhibition of naval artillery as the ship fired its guns in honor of the day.
To provide some context, the preparation for this spectacular event required a talented pyrotechnic crew who worked tirelessly for several days to set up the naval guns. The ship showcased not only its formidable 6-inch guns but also the 4-inch side guns and the iconic 40mm BOFORS guns positioned on the bridge.
With two cameras strategically placed on the deck and my phone recording from the Compass Platform, I was able to synchronize both video and audio for a truly immersive experience. The result was a thrilling display that reverberated across the water—a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made during the Second World War.
As the guns roared to life, I could feel the energy and pride of everyone on board, as well as the importance of remembering this pivotal moment in history. Each blast was not just a demonstration of military might, but a heartfelt salute to the resilience and bravery of those who fought for peace.
Join me in reflecting on this significant anniversary and the stories of valor that HMS Belfast continues to share. The echoes of the past remind us of the enduring spirit of freedom and the collective responsibility to uphold these values.
