Reminder for Cyclists: Keep to the Left for a Safer Riding Experience

As cyclists, we all share the road and have a responsibility to ensure that everyone can ride safely and efficiently. Today, I want to address an important matter: the practice of staying to the left unless circumstances dictate otherwise.

While it’s perfectly acceptable to ride at your own pace—especially for those who may be less experienced—it’s crucial to remember that there are others on the road with different agendas. Some riders are commuting and may need to reach their destinations more swiftly.

Recently, I found myself behind a slower cyclist during a busy ride. I was respectful and chose to ride behind them as there was a line of cars to my right. However, when the bus and cycle lane widened, the cyclist moved to the right but maintained their slower speed, which caused congestion and forced those of us behind them to navigate around them in a precarious manner.

This situation highlights the importance of keeping to the left when cycling at a slower pace. Failing to do so can force fellow cyclists into risky situations as they attempt to overtake you, which ultimately puts everyone at a higher risk for accidents.

So please, if you’re cycling at a leisurely speed, try to remain left, unless you’re preparing to turn left at an intersection or there’s no room to do so safely. This practice will not only benefit you, but it will also enhance the overall safety and flow of cycling on our roads.

Your consideration can make a significant difference. Let’s work together to create a more harmonious cycling environment for everyone. Share your thoughts on this topic and let’s continue to encourage safe practices among our cycling community!
