USA to UK for 10 days. No idea what I’m doing. First international travel.

First-Time International Travelers: Navigating a Journey from Texas to the UK

Embarking on an international adventure can be both exhilarating and a bit daunting, especially for first-time travelers. As my wife and I prepare for our 10-day trip to the United Kingdom this October, we’re finding ourselves filled with excitement yet grappling with many questions. For any fellow novice jet-setters out there, here’s a glimpse into our pre-trip concerns and some insights we’ve gathered along the way.

What Do We Need for Entry?

As American citizens, I was relieved to learn that our primary requirement for entering the UK is a valid passport—luckily, ours aren’t nearing expiration. However, one lingering question remains: do we need additional documents, such as COVID vaccination cards or any other proof of health status? It seems prudent to check the latest travel guidelines closer to our departure date, as these particulars can change frequently.

Currency Questions: Cash vs. Cards

We’ve heard from various sources that our American Express and Visa cards equipped with contactless payment will function without issues during our stay. But what about cash? Will we encounter situations where cash is essential? If we decide to exchange our dollars for British pounds, where can we find a fair exchange rate? Researching local banks and Exchange Bureaus in the areas we’ll visit might prove beneficial.

Our Itinerary and Transportation Plans

We have our itinerary shaped around London, Brighton, and Bath, so transportation is a significant aspect of our planning since we won’t be renting a car. Relying on trains, buses, and rideshares like Uber should make getting around manageable. With our hotels booked and flights confirmed, we are focusing on ensuring smooth transitions between destinations.

Our Travel Preferences

While our days will likely be filled with shopping, quiet dinners, and perhaps a quiz night at a local pub, we’re leaning away from the typical tourist attractions. Instead, we’re drawn to quaint museums and charming antique and bookshops. Seeking intimate experiences in these destinations will certainly guide our planning.

As we approach our departure date, we’re all about embracing this new adventure, logistics and all. If you’ve traveled to the UK and have tips or experiences to share, we welcome your insights! Here’s to a memorable trip filled with exploration and discovery. Safe travels!
