Wandsworth Council Declines Opportunity to Raise Council Tax Despite Government Incentives
In a recent development, the UK Government announced that five London boroughs—namely Wandsworth, Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham, the City of London, and Kensington and Chelsea—would be permitted to increase their council tax bills by more than the standard five percent threshold in the fiscal years 2027/28 and 2028/29. This relaxation of the usual referendum requirement aims to accommodate changes in the funding model for local authorities, primarily benefiting outer London boroughs and other non-capital regions, while representing a shift away from inner London districts.
However, Wandsworth Council has taken a distinguishable stance by choosing not to take advantage of this increased flexibility. The council’s leadership, led by Labour’s Simon Hogg, emphasized their commitment to maintaining low council tax rates for residents. Hogg stated, “Wandsworth council sets the lowest council tax in the country. We don’t want the freedom to increase council tax beyond the five percent referendum limit, and my administration won’t be using it. It’s the right thing to keep council tax as low as we can.”
This decision underscores Wandsworth’s longstanding policy focus on fiscal prudence and affordability for its residents. While other councils may opt to leverage the new allowance to fund essential services or address budget shortfalls, Wandsworth’s leadership has prioritized stability and low taxation.
The government’s offer reflects a broader recalibration of local government funding, aimed at addressing disparities between inner and outer London authorities. Nonetheless, Wandsworth’s resolution to abstain from raising council tax aligns with its broader commitment to fiscal responsibility and resident-friendly policies.
As the 2027/28 and 2028/29 periods approach, it will be interesting to observe how this decision impacts Wandsworth’s budgeting strategies and service delivery, as well as how other boroughs choose to utilize their increased flexibility.
