Finding Affordable Sports Venues in South London: A Call for Recommendations
Organizing community sports activities can be both rewarding and challenging, especially when working within limited budgets. Currently, a dedicated volunteer-led group in South London is seeking affordable venues to host their sporting events, highlighting the broader issue of rising rental costs in the area.
Our Initiative and Challenges
Our group is passionate about promoting an obscure but engaging sport called Tambourelli, which we practice regularly at the Flaxman Sports Centre in Lambeth. As volunteers, we enjoy fostering a fun and active environment for participants, but we face financial constraints that threaten our ability to continue. Recently, the cost of renting the venue has increased, pushing us to consider either relocating or passing additional charges onto our attendees.
It’s worth noting that most of our participants are on minimum wage, and any increase in participation fees can be a barrier. For context, we recently raised the fee from £5 to £6—an adjustment that was met with some hesitation—reflecting the delicate balance between sustainability and accessibility.
Seeking Recommendations
Our immediate need is modest: we require just two badminton courts for our sessions. If you have suggestions for affordable sports venues within South London that can accommodate such requirements, we would be grateful for your insights. Your recommendations could help us continue providing a welcoming space for enthusiasts of lesser-known sports and promote community engagement.
