Pushing Beyond Limits: My 120km Non-Stop Journey Around the M25 Boundary
Last week, I embarked on a nearly unthinkable challenge: walking 120 kilometers non-stop around the M25 motorway boundary without carrying a bag. What began as a planned 100km walk quickly turned into a grueling test of endurance, mental resilience, and sheer determination. I want to share this experience in detail — because it was far more intense and transformative than I ever could have anticipated.
The Start: Delayed and Into the Night
I set out at 4:00 PM, deliberately choosing a late start to see how far I could push myself. However, I soon realized that walking into the night would be a formidable obstacle. The fog rolled in thick and heavy, reducing visibility to near zero, and I found myself lost in the woods, off the mapped trail for at least 10 kilometers. It felt like scenes from a survival movie — navigating without sight, relying solely on instinct.
With minimal supplies—just a small amount of food and water—I had to make quick pit stops at local pubs to refuel and keep moving forward. My tech gear misbehaved, and I had no choice but to depend heavily on manual navigation, especially when a companion with a physical map helped guide me through the dark hours.
The Darkness and Cold: A Fight Against the Elements
By midnight, exhaustion and the harsh 2°C temperature started to take their toll. I was sleepwalking over the trails, tripping, falling, and repeatedly waking up to push on. There was a moment I remember sitting quietly on a bench, overwhelmed and desperate for it all to end. It was at this low point that Martin found me, late at night in the woods. He arrived armed with power banks, food, water, and a physical map—crucial elements that kept me going when my technology was failing.
Breaking Point: A Willpower-Driven Finish
Despite the support, the physical toll was undeniable. Around the 30 km mark, my body was nearing its limit; by 86 km, mental fatigue hit hard after I realized I’d lost my Insta360 camera. I ran an extra 5 km in a fruitless search, exhausting myself further. The final 20 km, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, were the most challenging segment — crawling, dragging my left leg, and battling every ounce of mental and physical fatigue.
Just two kilometers from the finish line at Chertsey Bridge, my phone’s battery dropped to 4%. Fearing I’d lose GPS tracking and invalidate my effort, I resorted to running — a mistake that caused a knee injury but propelled me across the finish line. When I finally collapsed, a kind Uber driver had to help lift me into the vehicle. By the time I reached home, my brother had to carry me inside after I could no longer stand.
Lessons Learned: The Power of Mental Strength
This journey taught me one profound truth: no physical pain compares to the agony of giving up. Beyond the fatigue and discomfort, the greatest challenge was fighting against my own mind. The will to keep going — especially after kilometers of relentless effort — was what carried me through.
Looking back, I am astounded by what I achieved and immensely grateful for the support from friends, fellow Redditors, and the WhatsApp group we formed for future walks. Their encouragement kept me grounded during the darkest moments.
