More Tube tunnels switch on mobile coverage as rollout passes 60%

Title: Progress in Expanding Mobile Connectivity Throughout London’s Tube Network Reaches 60% Milestone

London’s transportation authority, Transport for London (TfL), has achieved a significant milestone in enhancing mobile connectivity across the city’s underground rail network. Currently, approximately 60% of below-ground stations now benefit from mobile signal coverage, marking a notable advancement in the ongoing rollout of comprehensive connectivity.

Major expansions are underway, with the Northern, Bakerloo, and Metropolitan lines poised to see substantial improvements by the end of the current summer season. These enhancements are part of TfL’s broader initiative to improve passenger experience through reliable communication services during underground commutes.

The initiative involves a dedicated team of hundreds of engineers working diligently—often during late-night hours—to install infrastructure that enables mobile coverage within the tunnels. This nighttime engineering work is critical, minimizing disruption to peak-hour services while accelerating progress across the network. The collaborative effort between TfL and Boldyn, a leading provider of connectivity solutions, is instrumental in ensuring timely deployment.

By the conclusion of this phase, the majority of the Northern, Bakerloo, and Metropolitan lines are expected to have fully functional mobile signals within their subterranean sections, significantly improving connectivity for daily commuters.

Beyond the London Underground, efforts are also underway to extend mobile coverage to other underground transit sections. Notably, sections of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) under the surface, as well as the Windrush Line connecting Highbury & Islington and New Cross, are being equipped with similar connectivity enhancements. These developments are part of TfL’s commitment to providing consistent, reliable mobile service across all of London’s public transportation infrastructure.

This ongoing project underscores TfL’s dedication to leveraging technological advancements to enhance passenger safety, communication, and overall travel experience. As work continues, Londoners can look forward to increasingly seamless connectivity during their journeys beneath the city streets.
