A child, can’t have been more than 13, just stopped me and asked “Can I have your Facebook please?”.

Unexpected Encounter in Islington: A Child’s Innocent Request That Left Us Pondering

Today, I experienced an encounter that lingered in my thoughts long after it happened. While walking through Islington, a young girl, who appeared to be no more than 13 years old, approached me and asked, quite casually, “Can I have your Facebook please?”

For context, I am a man in my early 60s. I replied honestly that I was not on Facebook. To my surprise, she simply responded with a polite “Ok, have a nice day,” and proceeded to walk away as if it was the most natural exchange in the world. Her demeanor was unassuming, yet the whole situation left me feeling somewhat unsettled.

In terms of appearance, she was quite small—I’m about 5 feet 10 inches—but I was using a walking stick, which may have made me seem more vulnerable. This perception caused a flicker of concern, prompting me to wonder about her intentions. I couldn’t help but speculate whether she was after more than just a social media contact, or if perhaps her request was innocent and naive.

Adding to the context, she was accompanied by a young boy, approximately 14 or 15 years old, who stood nearby. Both were casually dressed and seemed at ease in the urban environment.

While onlookers might see this as a simple, harmless request from a curious child, it naturally prompted me to reflect on safety and boundaries in public spaces. Instances like this highlight the importance of being vigilant, especially as children navigate the digital age with unfamiliar or potentially risky interactions.

If anyone has insights or similar experiences they’d like to share, I would be eager to hear them. Such encounters remind us to stay attentive and consider the subtle signals that may not always be immediately apparent.
