Introducing Shoulder to Shoulder: A London-Based Men’s Community of 1,600 Members – Ask Us Anything!

Shoulder to Shoulder: Building a Community of Connection and Support for Men in London

Since its humble inception in February 2025, Shoulder to Shoulder has grown from a small gathering of eight men to a vibrant community of over 1,600 individuals across London. What began as a simple walk and a coffee aimed at fostering genuine connections, open conversations about emotions, relationships, and personal challenges, has now blossomed into a movement dedicated to men’s mental health and authentic companionship.

Origin and Growth

The journey of Shoulder to Shoulder started with a shared desire among a few men to explore deeper connections beyond surface-level interactions. Recognizing the importance of vulnerability and support, they created a space where men could openly discuss their feelings, experiences, and hurdles. The community’s rapid growth has been powered largely by support from the Reddit community r/London, which has helped spread awareness and welcomed many new members.

Community Highlights and Achievements

Over the past 18 months, Shoulder to Shoulder has achieved several significant milestones:

  • Hosting over 300 events: From casual dinners like Curry and Pizza Clubs to activities such as board game nights, yoga sessions, men’s circles, hikes, retreats, and running clubs, the community offers diverse avenues for connection.
  • Establishing Core Values: Respect, authenticity, growth, ambition, and connection form the foundation of what the community stands for.
  • Building Leadership: A dedicated group called the Connectors, comprising 18 volunteers, members who actively organize events and support others within the community.
  • Forming Strategic Partnerships: Collaborations with organizations like Beder have enabled community members to access therapeutic support and mental health resources.
  • Media Recognitions: The community has been dubbed the ‘men’s group solving loneliness in the capital’ by The Times and referred to as an ‘anti-manosphere community’ by The Independent.
  • Engaging with City Leaders: Members have had the opportunity to meet with Sadiq Khan, the Lord Mayor of London, to discuss issues surrounding loneliness and connection.
  • Participation in Pride London: Recent involvement in Pride reflects the community’s commitment to inclusiveness and visibility.

Challenges and Ongoing Conversations

While proud of their accomplishments, the Shoulder to Shoulder team acknowledges the hurdles faced along the way:

  • Sustainability: Maintaining the community without charging membership fees remains a challenge. An optional pay-it-forward model helps cover some costs but isn’t sufficient for long-term sustainability.
  • Stigma and Perception: Overcoming negative stereotypes associated with ‘men’s groups,’ often influenced by the manosphere, requires ongoing effort to present an authentic and welcoming environment.
  • Addressing Feedback: The community is committed to transparency, openly discussing concerns and critiques—whether from members or outsiders—such as those expressed on Reddit.

An Open Invitation

Transparency and accountability are central to Shoulder to Shoulder’s ethos. The team frequently contributes to broader societal debates about loneliness, mental health, and building meaningful relationships. As part of their ongoing commitment to open dialogue, they are hosting an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit at 6:30 pm, featuring co-founders Tom and Dan, along with some remarkable community members.

Whether you’re curious about men’s mental health, the lessons learned through fostering connection, or even fun topics like the community’s favorite pizza, no question is too big or small. This event offers an opportunity to learn more about the community’s story, challenges, and vision for the future.
