Another gay venue in Soho closed down..

End of an Era: Closure of a Beloved Soho LGBTQ+ Venue

The vibrant nightlife scene of Soho, renowned for its diverse and inclusive atmosphere, has recently experienced another loss. A distinguished gay venue, CIRCA, has announced its closure after more than a decade of operation, marking the end of an era for many loyal patrons and the local community.

Reflecting on CIRCA’s Legacy

CIRCA celebrated its 15th Pride this year, a milestone that underscores its longstanding contribution to Soho’s LGBTQ+ hospitality landscape. The venue was more than just a bar; it was a sanctuary where community members could unwind, connect, and find comfort within a welcoming environment. For individuals who face hearing impairments, the lounge area offered a tranquil space to enjoy a drink and engage in conversations, further highlighting the venue’s inclusive ethos.

A Heartfelt Farewell from the CIRCA Team

In a heartfelt notice posted on the venue’s window, the team expressed both pride and regret:

“We’ve celebrated our 15th Pride, and are proud to have done so with all of you. With that, we’ve made the difficult decision to close CIRCA.

When we created CIRCA, Soho felt different. We created a proudly independent bar without any certainty of success — indeed, with great risks involved — but we had an instinct and a passion for what Soho needed. And you responded in increasing numbers, making CIRCA not just a spot for a quick visit, but your destination bar and a place to forge lasting memories.

As our lease concludes, the decision—to renew or not—was based on whether we could uphold and enhance this legacy. Sadly, we have concluded we cannot. To everyone who walked through our doors, supported us, worked with us, and made CIRCA what it was—THANK YOU. You created something truly special, and we will always be grateful.”

Honoring a Community Institution

The closure of CIRCA underscores the challenges faced by independent venues in the dynamic landscape of nightlife and hospitality. These spaces serve as vital cultural hubs, offering a sense of community and belonging that is especially crucial for marginalized groups.

While the physical doors of CIRCA are closing, its spirit endures through memories and the community it fostered. The venue’s commitment to inclusivity and creating a safe space exemplifies the important role such establishments play in enriching Soho’s diverse social fabric.

Looking Ahead

As Soho continues to evolve, the departure of longstanding venues like CIRCA prompts reflection on preserving the character and diversity that define this iconic district. The legacy of CIRCA reminds us of the importance of dedicated spaces where everyone feels welcomed, celebrated, and free to be themselves.

To the team behind CIRCA—thank you for your years of service and the indelible mark you have left on Soho’s LGBTQ+ community. Your efforts have created a lasting legacy that will be cherished for years to come.
