I saw my first waymo. It thinks it’s a bike, bless it

Encountering a Waymo Autonomous Vehicle: A Personal Reflection

Recently, I had my first close encounter with a Waymo autonomous vehicle—a milestone that I found both intriguing and somewhat nostalgic. Although these vehicles have been operational since the start of the year, I hadn’t had the chance to see one in person, given my usual location in the suburbs.

The vehicle I encountered appeared to be a Waymo to me, and intriguingly, it carried what seemed to be a human driver or passenger service agent onboard. This raised an interesting question in my mind: in situations requiring crossing an advanced stop line, would responsibility lie with the AI system or the human onboard?

It’s worth noting that in the moment, I inadvertently crossed the stop line myself. Admittedly, I was a bit apprehensive, concerned for my safety. My actions were driven by a combination of curiosity and a natural human instinct to proceed cautiously when faced with unfamiliar technology.

This encounter left me contemplating the evolving role of autonomous vehicles in our transportation landscape. As AI-driven systems become more prevalent, understanding the coordination between human oversight and automation remains crucial for ensuring safety and public trust.

In summary, witnessing a Waymo vehicle up close was a memorable experience that highlighted the ongoing integration of autonomous technology into everyday life. It also underscored the importance of clear protocols and human oversight in the deployment of self-driving cars—a topic that will undoubtedly continue to develop as these systems become more widespread.
