An open letter to the kind father and son who stood with us against hatred

As a first-generation immigrant and dedicated NHS healthcare professional, I have called the UK home since 2009. Over the past decade, I have studied, worked, and contributed to this country, eventually obtaining indefinite leave to remain and, ultimately, British citizenship. My journey here is one of perseverance and integration, shaped by a deep appreciation for the opportunities this nation has provided.

During a recent visit to Speaker’s Corner—a historic site renowned for free speech—I, along with my father who was visiting from abroad, found ourselves unexpectedly embroiled in a hostile confrontation. My father, who does not speak fluent English and comes from a country where free speech is limited, was eager to witness this emblem of British openness. Sadly, our appearance—a visibly non-white duo—prompted a visceral response from a group of white British individuals who launched a heated tirade against immigrants like us.

They accused us of various stereotypes—claiming that immigrants do not pay taxes, are stealing jobs, and should “get the fuck out of their country.” Recognizing that rational debate was futile and feeling overwhelmed by the surrounding hostility, I instinctively engaged in the argument, my fight response kicking in as I struggled to find an exit from the situation.

At that critical moment, a firm hand on my shoulder diverted my attention. Turning around, I saw a British father and his son observing the scene quietly. The father shook his head gently and, with a calm voice, said, “Not all of us are like that. I for one am glad that you’re here, and thank you for what you’re doing for our NHS.”

Their words momentarily shifted the atmosphere. Amidst the insults hurled at me—such as being called a “dirty Chinese communist” and being doubted for trustworthiness in a healthcare setting—the father and his son began to laugh, breaking the tension. Their lighthearted response underscored something vital: that hate does not define the true fabric of a nation rooted in values of kindness and respect.

With a gentle guiding gesture, they led us away from the aggressive crowd, moving calmly toward the exit. Their actions exemplified the British spirit of decency amid adversity, offering a poignant reminder of the importance of standing up against prejudice, even in the face of hostility.
