To the kind father and son who intervened to save us from racists at speaker’s corner

A Heartfelt Appreciation to the Brave Father and Son at Speakers’ Corner

As a first-generation immigrant and dedicated NHS worker, my journey to the United Kingdom has been marked by years of hard work, perseverance, and commitment. I arrived in 2009, pursuing my studies and professional aspirations with the hope of building a better future. Over time, I secured indefinite leave and eventually obtained British citizenship, embodying my deep-rooted desire to contribute positively to this society.

Recently, during a visit to Speakers’ Corner—a historic site renowned for free speech—I found myself caught in an unsettling confrontation. My father, visiting me for the holidays, accompanied me. He doesn’t speak much English and was eager to experience the culture and history of the UK firsthand. As we engaged with the environment, we unexpectedly became the targets of a heated exchange with a group of white British individuals who accused immigrants like myself of being detrimental to the country. They hurled insults, claiming that immigrants do not pay taxes, are stealing jobs, and should “Get the fuck out of their country.”

While such confrontations are often characterized by hostility, a surge of instinct prompted me to defend myself. Surrounded and overwhelmed, I responded, though I was uncertain of how to extricate myself from the situation. At that tense moment, a firm yet kind gesture changed everything.

A white British father and his son, observing the scene, gently laid a hand on my shoulder. The father shook his head and spoke calmly, saying, “Not all of us are like that. I, for one, am glad you’re here, and I thank you for what you’re doing for our NHS.” Their words cut through the hostility, highlighting the stark contrast between their empathy and the prejudiced rhetoric around us.

In response, the perpetrators resorted to insults, calling me a “dirty Chinese commie” and expressing doubts about my trustworthiness as an NHS professional. The absurdity of their accusations was almost humorous. The father and son looked at us and shared a laugh, a simple act that underscored the futility of hatred and ignorance. They then gently guided us away from the antagonistic crowd, allowing us to continue our day undisturbed.

This encounter left a lasting impression on me. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to that father and son for their kindness, integrity, and exemplary conduct. Their actions serve as a powerful reminder that disparaging stereotypes do not define the true spirit of Britain. Instead, it is compassion,
