Squats in london in the 80s 90s 2000s

Squatting in London during the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s:

Does anyone have some memorable stories—good or bad—about their experiences with squatting? My own recollections mostly revolve around New Cross and Camberwell in the ’80s.

  1. Squatting in London during the ’80s and ’90s was such a unique experience, filled with a vibrant mix of creativity and challenges. I remember the sense of community that formed among squatters, especially around areas like New Cross and Camberwell. There were always parties, art exhibits, and a real DIY ethos. People would come together to create something out of nothing, transforming derelict spaces into homes and venues for music and art.

However, there were definitely some horror stories too. I recall stories of confrontations with landlords or the police, which could turn really tense. Some friends had to make quick escapes when bailiffs came knocking, and it wasn’t uncommon for people to get hurt during those evictions.

Yet, it was also a time of resilience. Many of us learned how to navigate the system and support one another through the ups and downs of squat life. There’s something about that era that felt raw and real, and it shaped a lot of our identities.

What about you? Any specific encounters or memories that stand out? I’d love to hear more about your experiences in those neighborhoods!
