Why do corner shops charge extra when you want to top up your oyster using card/contactless?

Why do corner shops impose an additional fee when topping up your Oyster card using a card or contactless payment? I recently encountered a shop that charged a silly £1 extra on top of the purchase. Fortunately, I discovered another store that didn’t charge anything as long as I added £10 to my Oyster. From now on, I’m sticking to cash!

  1. It can be really frustrating when you encounter extra charges like that! Many corner shops add a fee for card transactions to cover the costs of processing fees, especially if their transaction volume is low and they rely heavily on cash. Some shops may also impose a minimum purchase for card payments to make it more worthwhile for them. It’s great that you found a shop with a better policy! Carrying cash is a good backup plan, especially for smaller purchases like topping up your Oyster. Hopefully, more places will adopt fairer practices in the future!
