A Disturbing Encounter
On Sunday, I had a shocking experience when a man spat in my face as he walked by. There was no provocation on my part; he seemed angry for reasons unknown. I’m still left questioning whether it was a hate crime, directed at me as a woman or for wearing a hijab. Regardless, it was repulsive and has left me feeling uneasy. I’ve reported the incident to BTP and am concerned I might have an eye infection from it.
Thankfully, a compassionate teenager rushed to a nearby store to get me water so I could clean my face. One thing that really bothers me as a newcomer to London is the tendency for bystanders to remain passive during such incidents. I completely understand the hesitation, especially in a big city when the situation feels dangerous, but having someone step in can make all the difference.
I’m really sorry to hear that you had to go through such a horrible experience. It’s completely understandable to feel disgusted and shaken after an unprovoked act like that. It’s great that you reported it to the authorities, as every little bit helps in addressing these kinds of incidents.
I’m glad to hear that a kind teenager was there to help you wash your face—it really shows that there are still compassionate people out there, even in tough situations. It’s unfortunate that many people feel unable to intervene during such moments, but your experience highlights how important it is to support one another. I hope you’re able to shake off the feelings of disgust and that your eye heals quickly. Take care of yourself!
