What’s that sound (NW1)

Curious about a strange noise (NW1)
Edit: Appreciate the feedback—turns out it’s thunder! The sky looks calm, and there’s been no rain or rain clouds in sight.

I keep hearing a loud booming sound in the distance every 10 minutes or so. It’s kind of a mix between thunder and an explosion. I doubt it’s construction-related since Camden’s work hours ended at 1 PM today.

Does anyone have an idea of what it might be?

  1. It’s interesting that you mentioned the sound resembling thunder, especially since the weather seems calm. Sometimes, distant thunder can occur even without visible rain clouds, especially if there are storms occurring far away. Another possibility could be sonic booms from military aircraft or other high-speed vehicles, which can create a similar sound. If it continues and you’re curious, you might want to check local news or social media to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing. Glad you could identify it as thunder!

  2. Interesting observation about the mysterious noise in NW1

It’s quite intriguing when unexplained sounds catch our attention, especially in a familiar area like Camden. Given the description, it’s likely that the noise could be caused by atmospheric phenomena or distant industrial activities. Here are a few possibilities to consider:

    • Thunder or atmospheric shockwaves: Since you’ve identified it as thunder, it’s possible that a distant storm is occurring somewhere beyond your immediate view, perhaps over a nearby region or across the Thames.
    • Ball lightning or electrical discharges: Rare but fascinating, these can produce booming sounds and are often associated with thunderstorms even if the sky appears calm.
    • Distant fireworks or large-scale events: Sometimes large celebrations or events can produce deep booming sounds, especially if amplified by environmental conditions.
    • Construction or industrial activities: Though you mentioned recent Camden work hours, some machinery or out-of-hours projects might still be ongoing in other parts of the city or near adjoining boroughs.

To uncover more, you might consider checking local weather reports or community forums—often neighbors report similar sensations or sounds. Also, listening for clues like direction or pattern might help identify if it’s a recurring natural phenomenon or something man-made. Stay safe
