Heathrow Airport Shutdown

Heathrow Airport Closure Due to Power Outage

Heathrow Airport is set to remain closed until midnight tonight following a significant power outage caused by a large fire at a nearby electricity substation.

According to a spokesperson, the airport is “experiencing a significant power outage” and advised passengers to avoid the area until further notice. In an official statement, they noted: “While fire crews are addressing the situation, we currently lack clarity on when power might be restored reliably.”

To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, Heathrow will be closed until 23:59 on March 21, 2025. The airport is anticipating major disruptions in the coming days, and travelers are strongly advised not to come to the facility until the reopening announcement is made.

The fire is occurring at a substation located in Hayes, approximately 1.5 miles away from the airport, resulting in power outages for thousands of homes. Dramatic images from the scene reveal large flames and thick black smoke billowing into the air.

As one of the busiest airports in the world, Heathrow served a record 83.9 million passengers in 2024. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has dispatched 10 fire engines and about 70 firefighters to the location on Nestles Avenue.

Approximately 150 residents have been evacuated, and a 200-meter safety cordon has been established. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the LFB has received over 190 calls related to the incident, with the first report coming in at 11:23 PM.

Local residents are advised to keep windows and doors shut due to the significant smoke. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks reported a “widespread power cut” affecting Hayes, Hounslow, and nearby areas at 12:23 AM. They indicated that the situation is expected to be resolved by 3 AM, with an estimated 16,000 homes impacted.

Firefighting efforts involve teams from Heathrow, Hayes, Hillingdon, Southall, and other nearby stations.

Heathrow Airport’s closure due to a significant power outage caused by a nearby fire is bound to lead to considerable disruption, especially given its status as one of the busiest airports in the world. The safety of passengers and airport staff is, of course, the top priority, and it’s good to see that emergency services are responding promptly.

It’s unfortunate that thousands of homes are also affected, and I hope that the situation is resolved as quickly as possible for everyone involved. The response from the London Fire Brigade sounds robust, with many fire engines and firefighters on the scene. I also appreciate the community messages urging residents to keep their windows and doors closed to protect against smoke inhalation.

For travelers, it’s crucial to heed the advice not to head to the airport until further notice. I hope those affected can make alternative arrangements without too much hassle and that power is restored soon for the surrounding areas. Let’s all stay informed and support one another during this disruptive time.
