I find myself in an unexpected place, reaching out to share a chapter of my life steeped in challenges and the resilient flicker of hope. Raised and rooted in London, I assumed life would progress effortlessly, buoyed by strong academic foundations and a promising degree in STEM. Yet, life had its own unfolding, and over the past year, it has veered sharply off course.

For the past three months, I’ve been navigating the harsh reality of homelessness. Initially, I found refuge on friends’ couches, but I’ve since been forced to sleep on the streets or seek shelter in 24-hour public spaces. This experience is daunting and humbling. Hunger has become a constant companion, leading me to desperate measures such as shoplifting food to survive. It’s a truth I loathe to admit.

This year, my family endured a significant upheaval when my mother’s health declined. She spent extended periods in the hospital, ultimately losing her business. Now residing in sheltered housing, she can barely sustain herself, leaving me with no option to stay with her.

I have pursued every avenue I could think of:

  • Applied for Universal Credit and various benefits.
  • Reached out to the local council for help, only to receive disheartening advice to seek out friends for shelter.
  • Contacted charities, only to encounter endless waiting lists and bureaucratic delays.

Just a year ago, I embarked on my first post-graduate job. However, I found myself dismissed within two weeks, casting my life into chaos. I’ve approached many job sectors, from temporary work to delivery services, emerging with meager returns.

This platform has become my outlet because speaking with friends feels too burdensome. While life feels overwhelming now, I remind myself that, although daunting, these trials will pass. At 25, I’m determined to learn from each difficulty, adopting gratitude as my coping mechanism.

UPDATE Encouragement from the community led me to establish a PayPal account for assistance in meeting basic needs, primarily regarding food. Transparency is my priority, ensuring each donation is carefully recorded and any surplus directed towards helping others in similar situations.
