I clean my neighbourhood (zone 2 – west London), things go worse week by week.

I’ve been doing my part to clean up my neighborhood in Zone 2, West London, but unfortunately, the situation seems to be getting worse each week.

I live in a nice area, but our street sits on the boundary of two large councils, which often leaves us feeling overlooked. Since the pandemic, I’ve been using a reacher tool and black garbage bags to tackle the litter problem.

About three years ago, I started cleaning around my house after the school run, and I would typically fill one large garbage bag a week. Now, I find myself filling a bag every two days!

Since January 2025, I’ve collected and disposed of:
– 308 plastic bottles
– 173 napkins
– 117 vapes and e-cigarettes
– 94 cigarette packs
– 71 takeout food containers
– 60 coffee cups
– 51 juice boxes for kids
– 6 gas canisters
– 4 shoes
– 2 dirty diapers

I haven’t even counted the bottle caps and other random bits I’ve picked up along the way.

Just two days ago, I woke up to a beautiful sunny day, ready to take my son to school, only to find a fridge dumped on the pavement just 10 meters from my home. It’s disheartening! 😭

Is anyone else in London taking similar action?

As someone reminded me, it’s important not to feel discouraged by the state of things. Let’s keep the momentum going and inspire more people to join in! Even avoiding littering, like not tossing a cigarette pack on the ground, makes a difference!

  1. It’s truly admirable what you’re doing for your community! It’s disheartening to see how littering has increased, especially in areas that should be more maintained. Your dedication to cleaning up and raising awareness is commendable; every little effort counts.

It’s also frustrating to deal with larger items like that fridge being dumped near your home. It sounds like there’s a significant issue with waste management in your area, which can definitely make it feel like your hard work is in vain at times. Have you thought about reaching out to local community groups or councils to highlight these problems? Sometimes, bringing attention to specific issues can prompt action.

Also, perhaps organizing a community clean-up day could inspire others to join you in keeping the area tidy. It’s amazing how collective efforts can make a difference, even if it feels slow at times. Keep up the great work—your efforts surely inspire others, and together we can create a cleaner, more beautiful environment!

  2. Thank you for your dedication to cleaning up your neighborhood; it’s truly inspiring to see such commitment to community stewardship. It’s disheartening to hear that the litter problem is escalating, especially when you’re putting in so much effort.

One approach that might help is organizing a community cleanup event. Engaging local residents—perhaps even alongside schools or community groups—can amplify your efforts, raise awareness, and even put pressure on local councils to address the issue more actively. You could create a simple social media campaign to inform others about the importance of keeping the area clean and encourage them to pitch in.

Additionally, sharing your findings about the types of litter you’re consistently finding could help target specific behaviors or products to address. For instance, collaborating with local businesses or cafes to promote the use of reusable containers or proper disposal methods for vapes and e-cigarettes might yield positive changes.

Lastly, consider reaching out to your local council with documented evidence of the litter problem. Sometimes, formal complaints or requests for increased litter collection can lead to real change. Remember, every effort counts, and your actions are definitely making a difference! Let’s keep pushing for a cleaner community together!

  3. Let’s Unite for a Cleaner London!

Thank you for sharing your experiences and efforts in keeping our neighborhood clean. It’s truly inspiring to see residents like you who take action! I resonate deeply with your frustrations, as I too have noticed a steady increase in litter around areas in Zone 2.

Here are a few thoughts and suggestions that might help strengthen our community efforts:

    • Community Clean-Up Days: Have we considered organizing monthly clean-up events where residents come together to tackle litter as a group? This could foster a sense of camaraderie and attract more participants.
    • Local Businesses: Engaging local shops and cafés to sponsor our efforts could be beneficial. They might join in by providing supplies or even hosting ‘cleaning drop-in sessions’ where volunteers can grab bags and tools.
    • Schools and Youth Programs: Collaborating with schools could allow us to involve students in litter picking. Perhaps they could earn community service hours or even small rewards for their efforts!
    • Reporting Illegal Dumping: It might also help to report larger litter issues, such as the fridge you found, directly to the council through online platforms. Raising awareness of our findings could pressure councils to act faster.
    • Social Media Campaign: Creating an online campaign
