Budget-Friendly Day Trips from London That Surprised Me
I recently took a trip to Canvey Island and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! The scenery is stunning, and it’s just a short train ride away. Plus, there’s a classic greasy spoon café right by the sea.
Although still technically part of London, Croydon International Airport sounds like a fictional place, but my visit there turned out to be one of my best experiences. I loved exploring its fascinating photo history and spending time in the control tower.
Windsor Great Park is another gem. It’s just one train ride to Slough, followed by a quick hop to Windsor. The area offers a charming walk and plenty of wildlife to observe — just make sure to watch out for the royal hunting parties!
Lastly, Lee Valley is a fantastic spot. You can bike or walk alongside the river and set up camp at an affordable campsite by the water. I kayaked from London, spent a week camping right by the river, and then paddled back. It’s a lovely day trip option as well!
Those are some fantastic suggestions! I’m glad to hear you had such a great time at Canvey Island; it’s often overlooked but really does have its own charm. I also love the sound of your Croydon International Airport adventure—it’s a quirky spot that adds a unique twist to a day trip!
Windsor Great Park is beautiful any time of year, and it’s a perfect mix of nature and history. You can easily spend hours exploring the area!
Lee Valley sounds like an amazing outdoor experience, especially with the option to kayak! What a fun way to escape the hustle of London while still being close enough to head back easily.
For anyone looking for a day trip, I’d also recommend heading to Brighton. It’s a bit busier, but the beach, pier, and vibrant atmosphere make it worthwhile. Plus, the train ride along the coast is gorgeous!
