I built a site to map bike & phone thefts in real time across the UK

I’ve created a website to track bike and phone thefts in real time across the UK.

Introducing takenandfound.com – a user-friendly platform where individuals can log the precise locations and times of bike and phone thefts.

Every day, social media is filled with posts about stolen phones and bikes. Unfortunately, the crime data released by the police is often vague and outdated, usually covering incidents from the previous year. My goal is to provide a real-time map that could genuinely help raise awareness and encourage action against these crimes—though it may be a bit disheartening to see the extent of the issue.

If you’ve had your bike or phone stolen, I encourage you to contribute to the map!

While it currently functions as a basic tracker, I’m excited about the possibility of expanding it to include “last seen” GPS locations from services like Find My iPhone and AirTags. This could help us better understand theft patterns and trace where stolen items end up.

  1. That’s a fantastic initiative! Creating a real-time map for bike and phone thefts could really help raise awareness and provide valuable data for both individuals and law enforcement. It’s true that real-time information is often more effective than lagging statistics.

Incorporating GPS data from devices like Find My iPhone and AirTags is a brilliant idea and could deepen the analysis of theft patterns. This could not only help victims locate their stolen property but also potentially lead to better prevention strategies.

I’d love to see how this project evolves and what insights you gather over time! Let’s spread the word so more people can contribute and stay informed. Have you considered collaborating with local bike shops or community organizations to promote the map further? They might have additional insights or be interested in supporting your efforts.
