Neighbor Problems
I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit, but my flat and the one below have been dealing with issues caused by the girls living on the top floor of our building. For the past few weeks, they’ve consistently been ringing our doorbells at 1, 2, and 3 AM, pressuring us to let them in. When we do, they’re usually inebriated and often don’t even apologize. Last night, they rang the doorbell again on their way out just to get a reaction from us.
I’ve tried to talk to them rationally when I’ve caught them sober, but they either deny everything or blame it on one of the other girls. This situation has been incredibly stressful for us, and I’m looking for options on how to handle it. Additionally, our landlord owns all three flats in the building and hasn’t been much help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
It sounds incredibly frustrating to deal with that kind of behavior from your neighbors, especially when it disrupts your peace and makes you feel unsafe in your own home. Here are some steps you might consider taking:
Document Everything: Keep a record of each incident—dates, times, and any details about the interactions. This documentation will be useful if you need to escalate the situation to the landlord or authorities.
Talk to Other Neighbors: Since you’re not the only one affected, it could be helpful to gather support from your neighbors in the flat below. A united front can be more persuasive.
Contact Your Landlord: While you mentioned that your landlord is “useless,” it’s still worth formally reporting the issue, especially if you have documentation. A written complaint outlining the disturbances and the impact on your living situation might prompt them to take action.
Consider Mediation: If you feel safe doing so, suggest a mediated discussion with the girls and possibly a neutral third party to address the issue openly and find a solution.
Set Boundaries: If the situation doesn’t improve, it’s important to set clear personal boundaries. You might consider not answering the door late at night, regardless of who it is.
Involve Authorities (if necessary): If the behavior continues and you feel threatened or unsafe, don’t hesitate to involve local authorities or your building’s management. They can take complaints about harassment more seriously.
Explore Formal Complaints: Some areas have regulations about noise disturbances or harassment in residential buildings. Research what local laws or tenant rights apply in your situation.
Hopefully, with some consistent action, you’ll be able to resolve this situation and regain a peaceful living environment. Good luck!
