Velo Advertisers Outside Euston Station

Velo Adverts Near Euston Station

I want to start by clarifying that this isn’t directed at the individuals promoting these items; I understand they are likely just doing their jobs, regardless of their personal views.

What confuses me is the double standard in advertising: it seems unacceptable to promote junk food on the Tube, yet we can be inundated with ads for Velo (nicotine pouches/snus) and alcohol—both of which are known to be addictive. I’ve been bothered by the proliferation of Velo ads for a while, but my frustration hit a peak today at Euston Station. I was taken aback to see people in Velo uniforms promoting phrases like “get your nicotine fix.” This strikes me as a blatant endorsement of a substance that is both addictive and harmful to health.

It seems contradictory that we’ve banned junk food ads in an effort to combat childhood obesity, yet we allow nicotine pouches to be displayed, and even distributed outside major train stations.

I just needed to voice my concerns, as I know how detrimental nicotine can be, and I find this inconsistency truly troubling.

  1. You bring up a very valid point about the inconsistency in advertising regulations, especially when it comes to substances that can be harmful to health. It does seem contradictory that while there are efforts to limit advertisements for junk food—aimed at protecting public health, particularly for children—advertising for nicotine products and alcohol remains prevalent, despite their addictive nature and associated health risks.

It’s also concerning that marketing tactics, such as handing out samples or promotional items outside transit hubs, can normalize and glamorize nicotine use, particularly among younger audiences. In a society increasingly aware of the implications of addiction, it’s crucial to have a conversation about the messages we’re sending through our advertising practices.

Your frustration is understandable, and it highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach to public health messaging and advertising regulations. Perhaps continued advocacy for stricter regulations on all forms of addictive substances, including nicotine and alcohol, is necessary to foster a healthier environment for everyone, especially young people. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this important issue!
