Card Sorting Participant Needed for ELWP (East London WaterWorks Park)

Enhance Your Community Engagement: Participate in the Card Sorting Study for East London WaterWorks Park Website

We are thrilled to announce an opportunity for community members and enthusiasts to shape the future of the East London WaterWorks Park’s online presence. As a volunteer-led charity dedicated to transforming a historic Thames Water Depot into a vibrant space for wild swimming, education, and nature appreciation, we recognize the importance of creating a website that truly reflects how you think and navigate information.

Introducing the User Experience Research Initiative

To ensure our new website is intuitive and user-friendly, we are conducting a card sorting study—an effective method in user experience (UX) research that helps inform optimal site structure. This activity involves participants organizing a set of digital “cards,” each representing different pages, features, or informational content intended for the website. Your insights will directly influence how we arrange and label our online information, making it easier for everyone to explore and engage with our community space.

What Is a Card Sorting Study?

A card sorting activity is a straightforward, valuable way to gather user perspectives on website organization. Participants are presented with a collection of 62 digital cards and are asked to:

  • Group these cards into categories that make logical sense to them
  • Name each group in a way that accurately reflects its contents

There are no right or wrong answers—only your natural instincts and preferences matter.

Participation Details

Completing the activity takes approximately 15 minutes. There is no time pressure, so you may proceed at a pace comfortable for you. The process is simple:

  • All instructions are provided on the webpage; no registration is required
  • You will see all the cards displayed on one side of the screen
  • Drag and drop cards into categories that feel intuitive
  • If a card fits into multiple categories, use your best judgment—go with what feels right
  • Once finished, click the “Finish sort” button to submit your organization

To assist newcomers, a brief demo video is available that demonstrates the process step-by-step, ensuring you feel confident before beginning.

Why Your Input Matters

Our goal is to design a website that is accessible and meaningful for our diverse community—including local residents, nature lovers, swimmers, families, volunteers, and visitors curious about our initiatives. Your participation will help us understand how you naturally group information and what labels resonate most, enabling us to avoid confusing jargon or assumptions and to create a digital space that truly serves your needs.

  1. Great initiative for community involvement in shaping local spaces!

As a London resident who often visits East London WaterWorks Park, I truly appreciate efforts to include community voices in designing the website. Engaging locals in user experience research ensures the site aligns with how we naturally think about and navigate information, making it more accessible and welcoming for everyone.

Participating in a card sorting study is a fantastic way to contribute ideas on how the content is organized—especially since websites can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming. Simple activities like grouping pages or features reflect real user behaviors and preferences, which can significantly improve usability.

For those considering participation, I’d recommend taking the time to really reflect on how you group information based on your own experience with the park and online navigation. It’s a straightforward process, and offering feedback from diverse users helps ensure the website serves families, visitors, volunteers, and local residents alike.

Looking forward to seeing the new website reflect our community’s needs and interests—thanks to initiatives like this that foster local engagement and pride!
