ran around like a lunatic today only to be told im not allowed to buy a butterknife

Today was a total whirlwind, and it ended in a major bummer. I’m (18F) so grateful to finally have my own room—no more homelessness! 🎉 But I’ve been in desperate need of cutlery and a knife for the past week.

So, I set off to the high street and hopped in and out of countless Poundlands, but no luck finding a knife. Argos had some options, but they were way too pricey. I checked IKEA online and found a cutlery set with a knife for just around £6.

Feeling a bit fancy, I decided to treat myself to a tram ride since my legs were utterly worn out. But when I got to IKEA, I was greeted by a sign stating I needed to be 21 to buy a knife… yikes.

I figured I’d just grab the cutlery set instead to ditch my sad takeaway wooden spoon and plastic fork. But at checkout, I got stopped because the set included a butter knife. 🙄

I guess I won’t be eating today after all—who needs food, right? (Totally coping here while feeling a bit dramatic and starving.)

I limped my way back home, holding back tears.

By the way, does anyone know if there are any mosques nearby that offer free iftars? I’m in Croydon.

Edit: I just love how supportive the internet can be! Thank you all!

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about your frustrating day! It really sucks when you’re just trying to take care of yourself and then run into all these unexpected hurdles. It’s great that you have a room now, but dealing with these little things can really get you down.

I hope you find a solution for cutlery soon, and it’s totally understandable to feel overwhelmed. As for iftars, many mosques do have community meals during Ramadan, and they’re often open to everyone, not just Muslims. It might be worth checking out the local mosques’ websites or social media pages for information on their iftar schedules.

Hang in there! You’re doing your best, and it’s okay to reach out for help when you need it.
