Got physically assaulted in a Sainsbury’s queue today and security staff just mocked me

Understanding and Responding to Unexpected Violence in Public Spaces: A Personal Reflection

Today, I experienced an unsettling incident that has left me shaken and compelled me to share my story. While waiting in a supermarket queue at Sainsbury’s in Clapham Common, a situation unexpectedly escalated into physical violence, highlighting important concerns about safety, bystander intervention, and how such incidents are handled by staff.

The Incident

As a brief background, I am a woman with a non-visible mobility disability, standing at 5’4″. During my visit, the woman in front of me left her trolley and briefly walked away. When the queue moved forward, I stepped into the now-vacant space, not directly in front of her trolley but simply into the gap. Unexpectedly, she returned, initiated shouting at me, and physically pushed into me with her trolley, striking my ribs.

Despite my efforts to de-escalate by calmly informing her that she wasn’t in place and that the queue had moved, her aggression intensified. She continued to physically assault me, and I felt genuinely threatened, especially as she made continued physical contact. To protect my personal space and safety, I raised my voice and held my arms out to maintain distance—not to provoke, but to defend myself.

Poor Response from Staff

What was particularly distressing was the response from the security personnel present. Instead of stepping in to mediate or offer assistance, they mocked my distress, making comments like, “Did she hit you?” and joking about my response, even suggesting I should “punch her back.” Their attitude was dismissive and unhelpful, culminating in telling me to either return to the queue, leave the store, or call the police on my way home.

Taking Action

After leaving the store, I noticed the woman getting into her car. I took a photo of her vehicle and license plate before calling emergency services. I subsequently visited the police station to provide a statement. This step was taken because I was genuinely afraid she might escalate further or follow me, which proved to be a necessary precaution in the aftermath.

Reflections and Broader Concerns

Despite the trauma of the incident, I am still processing how quickly things escalated over what should have been a simple queue situation. The lack of effective intervention by staff—who were there to ensure customer safety—was disappointing and concerning. Incidents like these raise questions about public safety, the adequacy of staff training in managing conflicts, and the realities of daily life in busy urban environments like London.

Context and Personal Judgment

In the heat of the moment, calling emergency services might seem like an overreaction to some. However, given the physical pain I was experiencing and the apparent willingness of the other person to escalate violence, I felt justified in seeking help. My intention was to ensure my safety and to prevent further harm, which was my prerogative given the circumstances.

Final Thoughts

I want to thank those who took the time to read my story and offer supportive words and advice. It’s vital to remember that while opinions may differ on how to respond in such situations, kindness and understanding should guide our interactions, even online. We all face struggles, and showing compassion can make a difference.

To anyone reading this: please be cautious and prioritize your safety. And if you’re ever involved in or witness a similar incident, know that seeking help and standing up for yourself is valid.

Stay safe, and let’s advocate for better handling of public conflicts and increased staff training to ensure everyone’s security and dignity in shared spaces.
