Crafting a Nostalgic Easter Egg: Recreating a TfL Bus Stop in Cities: Skylines II
As an avid creator within the Cities: Skylines II community, I find designing assets both a rewarding artistic outlet and a chance to add personal touches to the game’s immersive environment. Recently, I embarked on a project to recreate a London Transit Authority (TfL) bus stop, aiming to enhance urban realism and inject a bit of London flair into my virtual city.
However, my creative process took a playful turn when I decided to embed a subtle nod to a well-known London mystery—a reference to the classic (and now solved) Hellraiser VHS case puzzle that captured the attention of the r/London community. This Easter egg, hidden within a common asset, was designed to intrigue observant players and spark curiosity.
Incorporating the Easter Egg: A Subtle, Yet Distinctive Touch
The game’s asset editing system allows for assigning probabilities to sub-objects, enabling nuanced placement and rarity for added immersion. I created three different models representing the iconic Hellraiser VHS cases, each rendered with distinct designs to resemble the mystery items. These were strategically placed as hidden details atop the bus stops—specifically on the roofs—where they appear with a 2% chance whenever a player adds one to their city.
This low probability ensures that the VHS cases remain a rare sight, encouraging players to explore and take notice when they do encounter them. Their scattered placement across various points of the bus stop enhances the element of randomness, making each discovery feel serendipitous rather than predetermined. Furthermore, the objects are labeled internally as “mysterious objects,” adding an extra layer of intrigue for anyone poking through the game files.
Sharing the Creation
For fellow Cities: Skylines II enthusiasts interested in incorporating this nostalgic Easter egg into their own creations, the asset is available for download. You can access it through the Paradox Plaza mod repository here: Download Link.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful asset design and subtle details can enrich the gaming experience, blending urban simulation with cultural and historical references that resonate with dedicated fans. Whether you’re a casual city builder or a dedicated London enthusiast, incorporating these hidden gems offers a delightful way to personalize your virtual metropolis.
