Celebrating New Life: The Hatch of Pigeon Chicks on My Balcony
Recently, I shared an update on a unique avian nesting project taking place right on my balcony. A pair of street pigeons chose a small planter box as their nesting site, initially constructing a modest nest comprised of a few twigs on dirt. Recognizing their efforts, I provided a more suitable nesting environment, which they readily accepted. Now, two weeks later, I am excited to share the joyful news: the pigeon eggs have successfully hatched.
The Journey from Incubation to Hatching
The hatchings occurred over the past few days, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing story of these birds. On the day the first chick emerged, I observed an intriguing and somewhat concerning event: a crow appeared nearby, following one of the parent pigeons during its return flight to the nest. The pigeons were immediately startled and took flight, and I watched as the crow, upon landing, took flight again, seemingly frightened by the encounter. Being present at that moment allowed me to witness this interaction firsthand.
Protection and Precaution
Crows are known predators of small birds’ eggs and chicks, which initially raised my fears for the newly hatched pigeon. However, my interference appears to have discouraged the crow from returning, at least for now. While I remain vigilant and concerned about potential future visits from predators, the chicks are still safe and under their parents’ care.
Growing Families: A New Arrival
The second chick hatched within the past 24 hours, as evidenced by a tiny, yellow, down-covered figure visible beneath its parent, nestled close to its sibling. Despite their apparent inexperience as first-time parents, the adult pigeons exhibit attentive and nurturing behaviors—feeding their offspring diligently through regurgitation and shielding them from potential threats.
Adorable but Vulnerable
The chicks are still in their early, fragile stage—small, floppy, and covered with yellow down—yet they are undeniably adorable. Watching their development has been a touching experience, highlighting the delicate balance of nature even in an urban environment.
