One request I have from all councils no matter who’s in charge.

A Plea to All Local Councils: Please Prioritize Proper Park Maintenance

One essential request I believe applies universally to all local councils, regardless of leadership or jurisdiction: please ensure our parks and green spaces are adequately watered and maintained.

The Importance of Green Spaces

Public parks are vital for community well-being, environmental health, and aesthetic appeal. They offer residents a place to relax, exercise, and connect with nature. However, during the recent warmer months, many parks have become parched and uninviting, detracting from these benefits.

Current Landscape and Challenges

It’s disheartening to see parks dry up, and some may assume that drought conditions are inevitable or that the grass will naturally recover with the change of seasons. There’s a misconception that continued neglect costs a fortune to rectify and that our frequent rainfall will offset dry spells. However, these assumptions overlook the reality on the ground.

For many local parks, the situation is more complex. Since the heatwave of 2022, large patches of grass have struggled to regrow. Instead, moss and mushrooms dominate these areas, indicating soil that has been severely dried out. The grass may yellow or die off completely, transforming once-lush lawns into barren patches that diminish the park’s usability and visual appeal.

Impacts of Climate Change

With climate change becoming more evident and pronounced, heatwaves are occurring more frequently and intensely. This trend threatens to turn our green spaces into arid, inhospitable environments if proactive measures aren’t taken. Many seem complacent, assuming that nature will “just take care of itself,” but this complacency can lead to the gradual loss of vital green infrastructure which benefits us all.

A Call for Action

It’s time for local authorities to recognize the importance of consistent watering and proper maintenance of parks throughout the year. Ensuring these spaces remain lush and accessible is not just about aesthetics—it’s about public health, environmental sustainability, and community vitality.

Let’s work together to advocate for better care of our green spaces. Proper park maintenance is a small investment that yields significant returns for our communities and our planet.
